About NASH 86

NASH 86 is Canada’s largest student journalism conference. Started by the Canadian University Press (CUP), NASH aims to educate and inspire the future of  journalism. For the last 86 years, a CUP member publication has hosted hundreds of student journalists and finds the best speakers, presenters and panelists in their area to create 3 days of learning, growth and development.

The theme this year is ADAPTATION. This theme captures the challenges that the media industry is currently facing with the rapid advancement of technology, changes in information consumption, and the rise of misinformation and fake news. It also represents the need for journalists to stay ahead of these changes, adapt, and pave the way for a new era of journalism. It encourages student journalists to explore new ways of reporting, different mediums of storytelling, and the ever-evolving relationship between media and society.

Every year, the John H. McDonald Awards for Excellence in Student Journalism — better known as the Johnnies or the JHMs — are also presented as a part of NASH. These prestigious awards recognize the very best in student journalism across the country.
